The best cover letters grab the attention of the reader within the first few sentences. This is your opportunity to immediately set yourself apart from everyone else. Employers are typically reading several cover letters and resumes so it is important to make yourself memorable to them as quickly as possible. To write professional cover letters that will make you stand out as the capable necessity, employers are searching for:
Keep it brief. Employers are reading so many cover letters from so many people that they will quickly stop reading a lengthy piece. One page should be enough to creatively market yourself to the potential employer.
Make it unique and interesting. Add your own personal flair to a letter so as to make it a bit less generic. Be relevant but make yourself stand out.
Definitely do not just copy your resume. This will be very redundant as employers will already have your resume. Employers will be unimpressed and you will more than likely be lost within the masses.
Write about why you want the job and what exactly you can bring to the table. Research the company beforehand and explain why you are the perfect fit for the position. Show that you have extensive knowledge about the industry and talk about where your expertise comes in.
“My name is ______ and I am applying for the position ________.” is a terrible way to introduce yourself. Remember the first few sentences are key to showing your creativity and proving that you are interesting enough to continue reading. You never want to bore your reader.
Send it as a PDF. This will guarantee that your formatting will not change from computer to computer.
