Credit cards seem like a great idea until you look at how much you spend at the end of every month. It is just too easy to swipe a credit card and worry about it later. This is such a huge trap that many people get caught in. As a college student, you especially need to be watching your credit habits because this is the time you need to be building up a good credit score. You need a good credit score in your adult life. So to make sure you start out on the right foot, here are some tips to follow when swiping (and refraining to swipe) your credit card:

  1. Use your credit card for small-ish purchases or limit your credit card for only one budget item. You can use your credit card to buy textbooks every semester. Paying with credit for regular purchases like gas or groceries is also a good idea.

  2. Think of your credit card as a debit card. Try not to spend more than you can afford and you should never run into any problems. Use it to pay for something on your budget.

  3. Choose a credit card that is right for you. There are many different types of credit cards so evaluate what you would use it for and make your decision from there.

  4. Always make your payments on time. Extra fees or charges can be added if you fail to do so.

  5. Think before you use it! Really try to plan your purchases out so you can efficiently manage all of your finances.
