Networking has quickly become one of the most important aspects of any job in every field. People can find really amazing jobs and companies can hire really amazing people, all through their professional network. The key is to network whenever and as much as possible. For this reason, you are never really “off” the job. Networking happens all the time in professional and non-professional settings. Companies and schools have networking events and seminars for professionals to learn and meet people. In recent years, social media has become a huge part of professional networking. Social media allows for people to connect with other individuals, join groups and discussion boards, and give information about themselves that can pertain to their professional abilities and background. LinkedIn has become a top professional online network and allows users to go into as much or as little detail as they want about their education and work background, as well as their experiences and current skill sets. Users can also “connect” with others which can lead to new connections with friends of friends. It is very important to always be looking to grow your network but it is equally important to do so in a genuine and caring way. Keep up with your contacts in any way you can because your professional network is just as important as your career.
