May is right around the corner whether we are ready for it or not. For many people, this means graduation. If you are graduating from high school, you are probably really excited about the new path you are about to begin. But if you are graduating from college than the feeling is probably much more bittersweet. For those people taking a job right out of college, here are a few tips to keep in mind in your new environment. The professional world is very different from the bubble of higher education and it is part of your job to figure it out and navigate through this new journey, on your own.
1. Learn from your mistakes and take them seriously. We all make mistakes and at a new job, fresh out of college, you are bound to make them at one point or another. It is probably best to do so sooner, rather than later but making mistakes are never really planned. The important take away from making a mistake is to learn from it, take responsibility for it, and then never make the same mistake again.
2. Pay attention. Sit back and learn what the atmosphere and expectations are of your colleagues. Feel the room out to see what is appropriate in that workplace. Some offices are more laid back than others but it is your responsibility to know what is suitable in your work environment.
3. Listen. Take in as much information as you can by listening to your colleagues. They know what they are talking about and listening to experienced professionals is the best way to learn for yourself.
4. Always thank people. It is so important to thank those that lend you a helping hand. It shows that you acknowledge and appreciate their time and help. Remember to also pay it forward whenever possible.
